Much like the recent storm hit the north-west the previous evening, the home side overwhelmed the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal triumph for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the top of the table.

Successive Setbacks for United

This outcome signalled successive WSL defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s capacity to manage league and European football with a small squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always appeared this was the period that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared fatigued throughout, the landmark win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the exclusion of the in-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in comparison, have no such loading issues. The City coach made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from injury.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to accumulate for the United boss and his side from the kickoff. This was a show of the strength from City whose dynamic offense manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a sublime initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.

This put the hosts completely dominant and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this encounter, United had conceded just six in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the presence of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her power to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Hemp was at the center of everything from the start, taking advantage of the space left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an chance for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of forays forwards, their straightforward approach giving them options in the flanks but they could not challenge the City goalkeeper. City, in the meantime, dominated possession, taunting their rivals and trying to pull them out of their structure.

Goals Galore

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A delivery to the far post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s 7th header of the campaign.

They increased their lead with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the center from defense, the pitch widened for the hosts. The key Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right before sending a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid shift in possession saw Hemp afforded the room to strike a shot home from range.

Second Half

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the post, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their advantage when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to beat any side who finished above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after nine games.
